What a UK vehicle data API costs
Why some checks cost pence and others cost pounds
The gap between a 4p DVLA lookup and a provenance check costing a few pounds is not margin: it is the source. DVLA registration data and DVSA MOT history come from public registers we query directly. Provenance draws on a licensed commercial register that aggregates insurance write-off records, finance agreements and police stolen markers, and that register charges per interrogation. So the price you pay reflects what the check costs to run, which is why the ratio between them is roughly the same wherever you buy it.
Per-lookup versus a seat licence
Plenty of vehicle-data suppliers sell an annual contract with a seat or site licence and a bundled allowance. That works out well above a certain volume and badly below it, because you pay for the allowance whether you use it or not. Per-lookup pricing inverts that: there is nothing to pay in a quiet month, and the rate falls as volume rises rather than being negotiated once a year. Somewhere around 250,000 lookups a month the arithmetic starts to favour a fixed-term agreement, which is why we offer one above that point and not below it.
What "free DVLA data" actually costs
The DVLA's Vehicle Enquiry Service has no per-lookup charge, and for a straightforward registration lookup it is a legitimate option worth considering. What you take on is the integration, the key management, the retry and rate-limit handling, and the compliance position, and you still have nothing for MOT history, valuation, provenance, specification or imagery, each of which is a separate source with its own contract. The question is not whether the data is free. It is whether five integrations and their maintenance cost less than a few pence a lookup.

Whoever you buy from, three questions are worth asking up front: are the per-lookup rates published or quoted on request; can you test the API before you sign anything; and are you charged for a lookup that returns nothing. - How much does a DVLA vehicle lookup cost?
- A DVLA registration lookup costs 15p per vehicle on Tier 1, falling to 4p on Tier 5. All prices are ex VAT, and you are only charged on a successful lookup.
- How much does an MOT history lookup cost?
- From 6p down to 2p per vehicle depending on your tier. That returns every DVSA test on record, with the odometer reading and advisories.
- How much does an HPI-style provenance check cost through an API?
- A provenance check costs £3.00 on Tier 1 and £2.34 on Tier 5. It costs more than a DVLA lookup because it draws on a licensed provenance register rather than a public one. HPI is a registered trade mark of HPI Limited; we are not affiliated with them.
- Is DVLA vehicle data free?
- The DVLA's own Vehicle Enquiry Service is available to registered users at no per-lookup charge, so "free" is fair as far as it goes. What it does not include is MOT history, valuation, provenance, specification or imagery: those come from separate sources, one of which is a licensed commercial register. You also own the integration, the key management and the compliance. Whether that is cheaper than a few pence a lookup depends entirely on what your engineering time is worth.
